General Sexual Health, Diagnosis and Management of Sexually Transmitted Infections

Diagnoses include testing for:

• HIV, syphilis and Hepatitis B
• Chlamydia and gonorrhoea in men
• Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis and candiasisis in women

The tests involve combinations of blood testing, urine and swabs. Tests are processed at Auckland Hospital Labplus laboratory and results are generally available in 3-4 days.
You will have a detailed medical and sexual health history taken and a physical examination.
You can also have an STI check-up done as a routine wellness check or if you have specific concerns.

Chronic Candidiasis (Thrush)

This condition, also known as thrush, is caused by an overgrowth of or a reaction to a yeast called Candida albicans. It is not a sexually transmissible infection. A range of factors can be associated with thrush. Most women however will develop ‘thrush’ without any identifiable precipitating factor. Uncomplicated thrush is common and should respond to over-the-counter antifungal creams and tablets.
Chronic or recurrent thrush can be a distressing and disabling problem. It is important to have a proper examination done to exclude other conditions such as dermatitis, skin diseases and genital herpes. We will provide you with current, accurate and balanced information regarding your self-care, diet and options for medical treatment. You may require a longer term course of anti-thrush treatment.

Discharge Problems (Urethritis and Vaginitis)

Vaginal discharge can be ‘normal’ (i.e. physiological) or it can be related to other causes. When discharge is abnormal, thick, yellow, odorous or irritating you should see a doctor. Common causes include conditions such as Candidiasis (Thrush), Bacterial Vaginosis or Chlamydia. Less common causes include inflammatory disorders. A referral to a specialist is useful if you have vaginal discharge that is recurring or if previous treatment has not helped.

Urethral discharge in men is often caused by an STI but there are other conditions that can be associated with discharge from the urethra. These include less common bacterial and viral infections, inflammatory disorders and structural problems in the urethra. Urethral discharge can sometimes be associated with other symptoms such as discomfort passing urine, or just an uncomfortable feeling in the urethra.

Genital Dermatology (skin problems)

The most common symptoms to affect the genital skin are lumps, bumps and itching. Skin can also break down, tear easily, have sores or ulcers and be painful or irritated. The common conditions that affect the genital skin are eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen sclerosis and lichen planus. Genital HPV

We specialise in the treatment of genital warts. This is a common condition which can be emotionally distressing. There are a variety of treatment options which include topical creams, liquid nitrogen freezing or laser treatment. It is also important to take care of yourself, communicate correctly with your partner and understand the issues around where HPV comes from and how it is passed on.

Genital Herpes
